Plausible alternative for PHP developers
Plausible and Quiet Metrics address the same discomfort: readable web analytics, with no tracking cookies, hosted in Europe. We do not solve it the same way, and the difference comes down to a single technical choice.
Everything written here about Plausible comes from its own published pages. They are dated and linked at the bottom. We can vouch for the state of our product, not theirs.
What Plausible does well
European hosting, stated plainly. Their site says "Made and hosted in the EU" and "Your data never leaves European-owned infrastructure". That is clear, and it is rare.
A self-hostable edition under a free licence. Plausible Community Edition is published under AGPLv3 and installs on your own server. We offer nothing equivalent.
An interface everyone understands. That is the same stance as ours, and it is a good one.

A script loaded by the browser can be blocked by the browser. That is true of every tool in this family, not only Plausible, and vendors generally offer a proxy served from your own domain to work around it, with its own share of setup. Sending the hit from the server removes the problem at the root: there is nothing on the client to block.
On self-hosting the advantage is theirs, without argument. Note all the same that their Community Edition publishes its own limits against the cloud offer: funnels, user journeys, ecommerce revenue goals, single sign-on and the sites API are not available there, bot filtering is basic, releases come twice a year, and support is community only.
When to stay with Plausible
If you want to self-host. We do not offer it. Their Community Edition is built for exactly that.
If your site is not built in PHP. Our value is in the server packages, and they are PHP, Laravel and Symfony. On a Node, Ruby or Python stack you would get half of our benefit, and Plausible will serve you better.
If open source is a requirement. We do not publish the platform under a free licence.
When to look at us
If you are losing traffic to blockers. That is the problem server-side measurement solves, and there is no other way to solve it completely.
If you already work in PHP. Three lines in a Laravel service, and measurement leaves from your own application.
If your requirements name France. Our measurement data is hosted there by a single processor, OVH SAS. Plausible states the European Union, which is enough in most cases but not in all.
