Matomo alternative for PHP developers
Matomo is the European heavyweight of web analytics, and for many projects it is the right choice. This page describes the cases where it is not, and what Quiet Metrics does differently.
Everything written here about Matomo comes from its own published pages. They are dated and linked at the bottom. If you are reading this long after that date, go and check with them: we can vouch for the state of our product, not theirs.
What Matomo does well
Feature coverage. Funnels, heatmaps, A/B testing, ecommerce tracking, segmentation, tag manager. On that ground we are not in the same category, and we are not trying to be.
A free, open edition. The Community edition installs on your own server, with no limit on users or hits, at no cost. Few vendors offer that.
European hosting on the cloud offer. Matomo Cloud data is hosted in Frankfurt, Germany.

Two of those four rows favour Matomo. That is as it should be: these are two different products, not a good one and a bad one.
On hosting, let us be precise rather than salesy. Frankfurt and France are both in the European Union, and for the vast majority of cases it comes to the same thing. The difference only matters if your requirements name France, which happens in public procurement and at some large accounts.
The real gap is the third row. Self-hosting Matomo means keeping a web server, a PHP version and a MySQL or MariaDB database, and following security updates. That is infrastructure work, it recurs, and it never ends.
When to stay with Matomo
If you need behavioural analysis. Multi-step funnels, heatmaps, journey replay: we do not do it and we will not. We measure audiences, we do not observe individuals.
If self-hosting is a requirement. We do not offer it, and that is deliberate. If full control of the infrastructure is one of your constraints, the Community edition is exactly what you need.
If your instance already runs and someone maintains it. Switching tools costs time and breaks the comparability of your history. Do not do it without a reason.
When to look at us
If you want server-side measurement without running a server. Our three Composer packages for plain PHP, Laravel and Symfony send the hit from your own application. No blocker can intercept it, and you have neither an instance nor a database to maintain.
If restraint interests you more than coverage. A dashboard that answers "how many people read this article" without training, rather than an analyst's tool nobody opens.
If your requirements name France. Our measurement data is hosted in France by a single processor, OVH SAS, and is never transferred outside the European Union.
